Summer Music Camps
I strongly support involvement in summer camps, and would gladly write a letter of recommendation for any of my students who are interested in attending.
Here are some of the most well-known and highly regarded camps.
Illinois Summer Youth Music (ISYM)
Eighteen different week-long camps at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, designed to challenge musicians of varying degrees in musical skills and development. Highly endorsed by music educators locally and nationally. Includes two flute camps.
Eastern Illinois University Summer Music Camps
Junior & senior band, choral festival, piano, jazz instrumental, and show choir festival. Instruction includes master classes, rehearsals, workshops, clinics, private lessons.
Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp
In Michigan, with a terrific national reputation. Audition requirements. Students receive five hours of intensive daily rehearsals, sectionals, and technique classes. Students also have the opportunity to hear various performances at Blue Lake's Summer Arts Festival, as well as participate in elective courses and recreational activities.
Interlochen Arts Camp
This is an advanced six-week program in Interlochen, Michgan. Some financial aid is available. From the web site: "The world's premier summer arts program for aspiring artists grades 3 through 12, Interlochen Arts Camp attracts students, faculty and staff from all 50 U.S. states and more than 40 countries."
Shell Lake Arts Center
Week-long programs in rock band, jazz, combos, hip hop, band, orchestra, piano accompaniment, show choir, saxophone, trumpet, and guitar. From the web site: "Located in beautiful northwestern Wisconsin, only a short hour and fifteen minutes north of Eau Claire, the Shell lake Arts Center in Shell Lake provides a premium learning experience for all students."
